Possessive Aaxes and Complement Composition

چکیده
A long-standing issue in the literature on clitics, namely, whether they can be best analysed as aaxes or syntactically autonomous words (postlexical clitics), is here addressed with respect to the Modern Greek`weak form' possessive pronoun. It is argued that distributional and phonological evidence strongly support an aaxal analysis. Apparent diiculties for extending to possessive aaxes an HPSG account that has been previously employed for pronominal aaxation in Romance VP are overcome, and a composition approach is proposed { one which takes a categorial grammar approach to adjectives and treats them as heads in NP, and does not require at NP structures that lack independent motivation in Modern Greek.

Agreement in Maasai and the Syntax of Possessive DPs (I)
Possessive DPs are “complex” in the sense that they involve two distinct nominal expressions as components.1 In this paper I address the issue of characterizing the nature of the syntactic relation holding between these two nominal expressions in possessives whose possessum is arguably not a syntactic argument-taking category. This amounts to providing an account of what licenses the insertion ...
متن کاملRelative Clause Constructions with Possessive Specifier Gaps : A Constraint-based Approach
This paper is concerned with a particular kind of Korean relative clause constructions that contain possessive specifier gaps, as opposed to complement or adjunct gaps. Those relative clauses have been known to violate Ross's Complex NP Constraint, and various attempts have been made to account for the apparent island violations. This paper argues that those relative clauses have possessive spe...
متن کاملTemporal Adjectives and the Structure of Possessive Dp
creates two interpretations. On one reading, the temporal adjective modifies the common noun (N-modifying reading). On the other, it modifies the possession relation (POSS-modifying reading). An explanation for this behavior is offered that appeals to what occurs in possessive sentences like John has a former car (N-modifying reading) and John formerly had a car (POSS-modifying reading). In the...

متن کاملSemantic variation and the grammar of property concepts
This paper discusses the effects of semantic variation in the meaning of property concept (PC) terms (Dixon 1982) on the grammar of predicative and comparative constructions. We demonstrate that, in a range of unrelated and less well-studied languages in which PC terms are not adjectival, such constructions systematically surface with possessive morphology/syntax. This pattern, which we refer t...
